How to Prepare for a Data Analyst Interview

A step by step guide to Data Analyst interviews: SQL tests, case studies and behavioral questions, with sample answers and mistakes to avoid.

The email from HR is short: "The next round includes a SQL test and a case study with the team lead." You open a practice site, solve three problems, then start wondering what you should really prepare first. This article breaks preparation into the parts most companies actually use, with examples you can adapt right away.

What a Data Analyst interview measures

Every company runs its process differently, but almost all of them test these four things in some form.

Before you start, reread the job description and highlight the tools it names. If it says Power BI, don't pour much time into other tools.

Passing the SQL test

Topics to be fluent in

  1. Every type of JOIN, and when rows get duplicated or dropped
  2. How GROUP BY and HAVING differ from WHERE
  3. Window functions such as ROW_NUMBER, RANK and LAG for problems like "repeat customers" or "sales versus last month"
  4. CTEs to split long queries into readable steps
  5. Handling NULL values and dates

Techniques during the test

Read the problem and ask before you write, for example "Should cancelled orders be included?" A question like this shows you think about data quality, not just syntax. In live coding, say what you are thinking at intervals. If you get stuck, explain the approach you would take. Many interviewers weigh your reasoning as much as the final answer.

Handling the case study with structure

A common prompt looks like "Online sales dropped this month. How would you analyse it?" Try this sequence.

  1. Clarify: dropped compared with what, last month or the same period last year? All channels or only some platforms?
  2. Break down the drivers: sales = visitors x conversion rate x order value, then check which one changed
  3. Form hypotheses: a campaign just ended, a competitor cut prices, or the checkout page has a problem
  4. Name the data you need: which tables, split by which dimensions
  5. Conclude and propose next steps: and state the limits of your analysis openly

The analyst who gets the job is not the one with the longest query, but the one who knows what to ask before writing it.

Behavioral questions for data roles

Prepare three or four real stories and tell them with the STAR structure (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Common questions include:

A sample opening line: "While building the branch sales report, I found that two branches were double counting returns, so I worked with accounting to fix the definition before the report went to management." One sentence covers the problem, the action and your care for data quality. See more on storytelling in the STAR Method.

Mistakes that get candidates cut

How to start preparing

  1. Read the job description and note the tools and the company's business domain
  2. Solve SQL problems daily, focusing on window functions and JOINs
  3. Pick a public dataset, build a mini project and summarise three insights
  4. Rehearse a case study out loud with a timer
  5. Prepare questions to ask back, such as which decisions the team most often makes with data
