AI Solutions Architect: The Person Who Designs AI Systems for the Business
An AI Solutions Architect turns business problems into AI architecture that works. Learn the role, its key decisions, the skills required and the path into it.
An executive says in a meeting, "We want AI to help customer service." IT asks where the data lives. Legal asks about the PDPA. Finance asks about the monthly cost. Everyone is right, but nobody sees the whole system. The person who has to turn all these questions into one plan is the AI Solutions Architect.
What is an AI Solutions Architect?
An AI Solutions Architect turns business problems into AI system architecture that can be built, maintained and justified on cost. The job isn't writing every line of code; it is choosing components, designing connections and making trade-off decisions before the team builds.
- Versus an AI Engineer: the AI Engineer builds features; the Architect designs the big picture and standards that several teams share.
- Versus an AI PM: the PM decides what to build for users; the Architect decides how to build it so the system can support it.
The key decisions an Architect makes
1. Choosing the approach
Is a prompt on a general model enough? Do you need RAG to pull company data, or an AI Agent that calls other systems? Or would a simple rules-based system do? Choosing wrong at the start wastes both time and budget.
2. Choosing the model and where it runs
Use a model through a provider's API, through the organisation's cloud, or run a model on internal infrastructure. Each option differs in cost, speed, data control and maintenance burden.
3. Designing the data flow
Which systems does data come from? Who may see what? Does personal data leave the organisation? Where are logs stored? These questions need legal and security involvement from the start.
4. Planning measurement and long-term care
A good Architect designs evaluation, monitoring and a plan for switching models from day one, because models and prices change fast. A system locked into a single provider with no way out is a risk.
Example: an assistant for branch staff
A retail chain wants branch staff to ask AI about return policies and promotions instantly. An Architect might design RAG over handbooks that the operations team updates regularly, restrict the AI to answering only from those documents with a citation every time, give different staff levels access to different documents, and set a test question suite that must pass before every update. Designed poorly, the same project could become a chatbot quoting promotions that expired long ago.
Skills and background you need
- Experience in software or cloud architecture and an understanding of enterprise systems
- Understanding of LLMs, RAG, AI Agents and the limits of each. For the basics, read Understanding AI Agent Architecture
- Cost thinking: estimating cost per use
- Communicating with executives, technical teams and legal in each group's own language
The market picture in Thailand
The Adecco Thailand Salary Guide 2026 does not list AI Solutions Architect separately, but it does list Software / Solutions Architect under IT, the closest match. Its monthly base salary ranges are 50,000 to 100,000 baht for 3 to 5 years of experience, 60,000 to 120,000 baht for 5 to 7 years, and 150,000 to 250,000 baht for more than 7 years. Treat these as a reference frame, not salaries for AI-specific roles.
Things to watch out for
- Don't design something more complex than the problem needs. Some problems are solved more simply without AI.
- Don't estimate cost from a demo. Real use has far more volume and edge cases.
- Every AI system needs a plan for wrong answers and a clearly responsible owner.
A good Architect doesn't choose the newest technology, but what the organisation can actually maintain.
The path into this role
- Build a strong foundation in software, data or cloud work first.
- Own at least one AI project from design to production. See the path in The AI Engineer Career Path in Thailand.
- Practise writing architecture documents that explain the reasoning behind decisions, not just diagrams.
- Learn security, the PDPA and cost estimation.
- Practise presenting options with trade-offs so executives can decide.
