10 AI Portfolio Projects That Get Employers' Attention
Ten AI project ideas that solve real problems and make strong case studies, from Thai-language RAG to AI Agents, plus how to present them so employers get it.
A tech recruiter opens a candidate's GitHub, finds three "ChatGPT clone" projects and one "Titanic prediction", and closes the window within minutes. Not because the code is bad, but because nothing shows this person can solve a real problem. A strong AI portfolio isn't measured by the number of projects, but by the story each one tells.
What makes a good AI portfolio?
An AI portfolio that employers care about shows that you can pick the right problem, build something real and measure it. Each project should answer four questions: what problem it solves, for whom, which approach you chose and why, and how you measured the result. If you can answer all four, a small project carries more weight than a large one with no context. The ideas below run from basic to advanced. Pick only the ones that match the role you want; you don't need all ten.
10 project ideas
1. RAG Q&A over Thai documents
For example, answering questions from an employee handbook or public government notices. Show how you handled Thai text without spaces between words, your chunking, and a test question set.
2. Customer review summariser and classifier
Use public product reviews, separate positive and negative themes, and build a simple dashboard for a marketing team.
3. Receipt or invoice data extraction
Turn images or PDFs into structured JSON, with a report on which fields are most often extracted incorrectly.
4. An AI Agent that uses tools
An agent that searches for data, calculates, then writes a short report. Show your tool-calling design and how you limited what the agent can do.
5. An office workflow automation
Built with n8n or Make, for example sorting emails and creating new tasks. Measure the real time saved.
6. An LLM evaluation suite
Compare several prompts or models on the same task with clear criteria. This is rare in portfolios, so it stands out.
7. A LINE OA chatbot for a small business
Answers questions about products and opening hours, and hands off to a person when it can't answer. Very relevant to the Thai business context.
8. A web app with AI as the core feature
Vibe coding lets you build it fast, but you need to explain how you made decisions about structure and security.
9. Connecting AI to tools via MCP
Let AI read data from Google Sheets or a database through an MCP server to show you understand system integration.
10. Analysing Thai open data with AI
Use data from the government open data portal, let AI help with analysis, then check the numbers yourself before drawing conclusions.
How to present it so employers get it
- A README front page that states the problem, the solution and the result in the first paragraph
- Numbers you measured yourself, such as how many test questions it answered correctly, or minutes saved per task
- A demo people can try, or a short video if you can't deploy
- A "what's not good yet" section that states limitations honestly and shows you understand real work
Things to watch out for
- Never use confidential customer or former-employer data. Use public or synthetic data.
- Never commit API keys to a repository.
- If AI helped you write the code, you must be able to explain every part, because interviews will go deep.
The best project in your portfolio is the one where you can explain "why", not just "what".
How to get started
- Pick one target role and read 5 to 10 job descriptions for it.
- Choose 2 or 3 projects from this list that match the skills in those posts.
- Finish the first project with a README and a test set before starting the next.
- If you're not yet comfortable building web apps, try the course Vibe Coding: Build an AI Web App with Lovable or Try MCP to Connect AI to Real Tools.
- Add project links to your resume, with a one-line result for each.
