AI-Augmented Execution Specialist: The Professional Who Delivers Faster and Better with AI

What the AI-augmented execution specialist role is, what research says about AI and performance, and the skills to build to step into it.

Two people get the same brief: build a campaign plan with 20 pieces of content and a summary report on last month's results. The first takes almost the whole week. The second delivers a first draft in a day, then spends the rest of the time checking the numbers, adjusting the copy to fit the brand and talking to the sales team. The difference is not effort. It is how they work with AI.

What is an AI-Augmented Execution Specialist?

It is an execution-side professional, in marketing, data, sales or operations, who uses AI as part of their working process every day, not just by opening a chat now and then. They know which work to let AI draft and which decisions to make themselves, and they take full responsibility for the quality of the final output.

In the SCALE Growth Squad model, this role is the Scale Execution tier, working between the fractional leaders who set strategy and the agentic AI systems that run routine work automatically.

What research says about AI and performance

A study by Harvard Business School with Boston Consulting Group, run with BCG consultants, found that on tasks inside AI's capability frontier, the group using GPT-4 completed 12.2% more tasks on average, worked 25.1% faster and produced results more than 40% higher in quality than the control group.

But on a task outside that frontier, consultants using AI were 19 percentage points less likely to reach a correct solution than those without it. The researchers call this boundary the "jagged technological frontier". The lesson: the key skill is not just using AI, but knowing when not to trust it.

On the labour market side, the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 names AI and big data as the fastest-growing skill, and employers expect 39% of workers' core skills to change by 2030.

Skills to build

1. Break work into steps

See what a big piece of work is made of, such as gathering data, analysing, drafting, checking and delivering, then decide which steps AI handles well and which need human judgement.

2. Brief AI like a professional

Give context, goals, constraints and examples of good work, as you would brief a new teammate. The results are far better than short commands.

3. Verify and own the output

Check numbers against real sources, verify facts and reread every piece before sending. Clients do not care who drafted it, only whether it is right.

4. Build reusable workflows

Keep prompt templates, set up automations and connect tools so weekly work keeps getting faster. Read more in AI Workflow Automation.

5. Deep knowledge of your own field

AI helps most when you know what a good result looks like, so domain expertise remains an essential foundation.

A real working day

A marketer on the growth team of a Thai retail brand starts the morning by having AI summarise yesterday's sales and ad results. He reads the summary and asks his own follow-up question about why one product group is declining. He then has AI draft several ad variations and narrows them down to the few that fit the brand best. In the afternoon he spends time with the sales team to understand customers, work AI cannot do for him. By the end of the week he has time left to test a new campaign instead of being buried in reports.

Watch out for

AI helps you draft faster, but the name on the work is still yours.

How to start

  1. Pick 1 task you repeat every week and break it into steps.
  2. Let AI do 1 to 2 of those steps and note what you had to fix.
  3. Save the prompts that work as templates.
  4. Measure time spent before and after so you can describe it as an achievement on your resume.
  5. Expand to the next task and keep learning with courses on Plants.work Learn.
