SEO Basics for People Who Want a Career in SEO: What to Learn and How to Practise

The three areas of SEO you need to understand to enter the field, the real job roles that exist, and how to build your first work sample on your own site.

Your interest in SEO might start with a small task at work, such as your manager asking why the company website does not show up on Google while competitors do. Or you write a blog as a hobby and wonder why some posts keep getting readers while others go quiet. That curiosity is a good starting point, because SEO work is about finding out why one page gets found and another does not, then fixing it systematically.

What SEO is

SEO (search engine optimization) means improving a website and its content so search engines understand it and show it when people search for related topics, without paying per click. Unlike SEM, or buying ads on search results, which stop showing the moment you stop paying, SEO takes longer to show results but those results build over time. The three areas you need to understand

1. On-page SEO: does the content answer the searcher's question?

Start by understanding what words people search with and what they want from them (search intent). Someone searching how to write a resume wants steps, while someone searching resume template wants a file to use right away. Your job is to make content that matches that need, with clear headings, title and meta description. Learn how to find search terms in keyword research basics.

2. Technical SEO: can search engines access the site?

Good content is useless if search engines cannot read it. This area covers page speed, mobile display, URL structure, sitemaps and handling duplicate pages. You do not need to be a strong coder, but you must be able to read reports from tools such as Google Search Console and explain problems clearly to developers.

3. Off-page SEO: do other sites reference you?

When trustworthy websites link to you, search engines see your content as valuable. This work is about creating content people want to cite and building relationships with media and partners, not buying links, which risks lower rankings. Read more in what backlinks are.

Common beginner misconceptions

The best first SEO work sample is your own website, where you can explain what you did, why, and what happened.

How to practise so you have work to show

  1. Start a small blog on a topic you truly know, such as coffee, cats or personal finance.
  2. Connect it to Google Search Console and an analytics tool from day one.
  3. Start every article with keyword research and note why you chose each term.
  4. Each month, record which pages started appearing in search, for which terms, and what you changed.
  5. After several months, write it up as a one-page case study to attach to applications.
