How to Write an HR Resume That Shows Results, Not Just Duties

How to write an HR resume for Recruiter, HRBP, C&B and L&D roles, turning duties into results, with example bullets and what interviewers look for.

HR people have read hundreds of resumes and know which ones stand out. Yet when writing their own, many write managed recruitment, prepared payroll, coordinated training: a list of duties everyone in the same role does. HR interviewers already know what those tasks are. What they want to know is how well you did them, and how you made the organisation better.

What a good HR resume must show

HR today is expected to connect to business goals, not just paperwork. A good resume shows three things: you understand the business you support, you solve people problems in measurable ways, and you handle sensitive matters professionally.

Writing bullets by specialism

Recruiter and Talent Acquisition

Before: Responsible for recruiting all positions.

After: Recruited sales and store staff for 12 branches. Cut the interview process from 3 rounds to 2 together with branch managers, shortening the time from opening a role to the candidate accepting the offer.

Useful measures include roles filled, time to hire, offer acceptance rate or the quality of hires who pass probation. Include only numbers you actually know.

HR Business Partner

Before: Looked after operations staff.

After: HRBP for a 300-person operations division. Analysed resignation data with line managers, found most leavers left within the first 6 months, and designed a buddy programme for new hires.

Compensation and Benefits

Before: Prepared payroll.

After: Ran accurate, on-time payroll for 500 employees every cycle. Moved calculations from Excel to an HRIS with the IT team, and built a new salary structure for technical roles.

Learning and Development

Before: Organised staff training.

After: Designed a new supervisor programme with senior leaders, tracked results through team-member surveys before and after training, and revised content for the next cohort based on the findings.

Numbers in these examples are only a guide. Use figures from your own real work only.

Readers of HR resumes do not ask what you looked after. They ask what got better after you looked after it.

Skills worth showing

On confidentiality

HR work involves sensitive information. Do not include employee names, case details or individual salary data from past employers. Showing that you know what should not be disclosed is a strength in itself, and interviewers notice.

Common mistakes

How to start

  1. Decide which HR specialism you are applying for and read 3 to 5 JDs in it.
  2. Write the organisation size, headcount and scope for each past role.
  3. Pick 3 to 4 key achievements per role, written as problem, action, result.
  4. Check that no personal data about former employees has slipped in.
  5. Prepare the story behind each achievement for the interview.
