How to Write a Finance and Accounting Resume That Gets Shortlisted

Finance and accounting resumes need precision and measurable results. How to write achievements, list systems and certifications, with before and after examples.

An accounting manager once said he puts a resume down as soon as he spots figures that don't add up or employment dates that overlap. The reason is simple: accounting and finance work demands precision, so your resume is the first sample of your work he sees. This article gathers ways to write a resume in this field that is both credible and stands out.

What finance employers look for

Recommended structure

  1. Summary: main field, experience, industry and specialisation
  2. Work experience: most recent first, focused on achievements
  3. Certifications and education: professional qualifications earned or in progress
  4. Systems and skills: grouped and easy to scan

Write achievements, not duties

Accounting professionals often write resumes as task lists, like "recorded transactions, prepared financial statements", which everyone in the same role does. Add how well you did it or what you improved.

Before and after examples

Include figures if you are allowed to share them and can explain them, but never include an employer's confidential financial data. Use scope instead, such as the number of entities or transactions you handled.

Be specific about systems and skills

If you have started using AI for analysis, read the guidance in AI for finance and FP&A, and include only what you actually do.

Write a summary that fits your sub-field

Finance is broad, and employers want to know immediately what you specialise in. A sample summary: "Accountant with six years in manufacturing, specialising in the monthly close and cost accounting, using ERP daily and coordinating with external auditors throughout the audit cycle." One sentence covers industry, specialty and systems. If you apply across several sub-fields, keep a separate resume for each.

Certifications to include

List professional qualifications relevant to the role, such as Thai Certified Public Accountant (CPA), registered bookkeeper, or international finance and audit qualifications. If you are still taking exams, state your status clearly, for example "passed two of four papers". Never imply you hold a qualification you don't, because it is easy to verify.

In finance, an error-free resume is the first proof of your attention to detail.

Check precision before sending

  1. Start and end dates for each role don't overlap and have no unexplained gaps
  2. Numbers and units use one consistent format throughout
  3. Company names, system names and standards are spelled correctly
  4. Have someone else proofread it once

How to start

  1. Pick the sub-field you are applying for, such as general accounting, tax, audit or FP&A
  2. Rewrite every bullet by adding what you improved or what resulted
  3. Group your systems and skills
  4. Check precision using the list above
