Online Marketing Plan for SMEs: Small Budget, Real Results

A step-by-step online marketing plan for small businesses on a tight budget: channels, content, ad testing and measurement, plus a sample first-month plan.

You run a small shop and sell good products, but most sales still come from people you know. You boosted a few posts, the money disappeared, and you are not sure what came back. The problem is not a small budget; it is the lack of a plan. Online marketing for SMEs does not mean being on every channel. It means choosing the right ones, staying consistent and measuring every week.

What is an online marketing plan?

It is a short document that answers who you sell to, through which channels, with what message, on what budget, and how you will know it works. A good SME plan can be a single page, yet it gives every baht you spend a reason.

Before planning, answer these 3 questions

  1. Who is your customer? Age, job, the problem they have, and which apps they use every day
  2. What do you sell, and how is it different? Write your key strength in one sentence
  3. What is this month's goal? Sales, chat enquiries, LINE followers or brand awareness. Pick one as the main goal

If you cannot answer clearly yet, do not run ads, because you will not know what to measure.

5 steps to plan

1. Choose 2 to 3 channels

Do not spread yourself too thin. Choose the channels where your customers actually are, for example:

2. Post content consistently

Set a number of posts per week you can really keep up, and rotate 4 types. A sample mix to start with is about half educational content, with the rest split between behind the scenes, customer reviews and promotions.

3. Test ads before scaling

Start with a daily budget you can afford to lose. Test 2 to 3 pieces of content at once, see which gets better results per baht, then put more budget behind that one. For the basics, read Running TikTok and Facebook ads for SMEs.

4. Build your customer base

Invite everyone who messages or buys to join your LINE OA, or record them in a CRM. Returning customers usually cost less than finding new ones. According to a 2024 announcement by LINE for Business, LINE OA has a Free package with a monthly limit on broadcast messages; check the latest terms before you start. For a how-to, see LINE OA for shops.

5. Measure and adjust every week

Look at just 3 things: which posts got the most engagement, which ads had the lowest cost per result, and which channel your paying customers came from. If you do not measure, you cannot improve.

Common mistakes

Good marketing is not about spending a lot. It is about knowing where your customers are and meeting them in the right place.

Where to start

  1. Write your answers to the 3 questions above on one page
  2. Pick 2 main channels and set a weekly number of posts you can actually keep
  3. Plan 4 weeks of content in advance
  4. Set a small ad test budget and decide which numbers you will measure
  5. Book 30 minutes with yourself every Monday to review results and adjust the plan
