Are Facebook/Meta Ads Still Worth It? How to Decide Before You Spend
The answer depends on your own numbers. Work out the cost per order you can afford, design a small test, and read the results to decide whether to continue.
Many online shop owners face the same situation: ads used to sell well, but lately the same budget brings fewer orders. One friend says Facebook does not work any more, another says it still sells fine. The most honest answer is that whether ads pay off depends on your business's numbers, not on anyone else's feelings.
What are Meta Ads?
Meta Ads is the advertising system that lets you run ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta's network from one place, Ads Manager. You choose an objective, such as sales, messages or leads, and the system tries to show your ads to people likely to take that action. Its strength is reaching people who do not know your brand yet, quickly. The risk is that with the wrong objective or measurement, money disappears just as quickly.
First question: how much can you pay in ads per order?
Before looking at likes or reach, work out this number. A hypothetical example:
- Product price: 590 baht.
- Product cost, packaging, shipping and fees: 340 baht in total.
- Gross profit: 250 baht per order.
So if your ad cost per order is above 250 baht, you lose money every time you sell. If customers tend to buy again, you might accept a higher cost on the first order, but only with real repeat-purchase data behind it, not a guess.
Which businesses tend to benefit, and which should think hard
Often a good fit
- Products that a picture or short video explains instantly.
- Enough profit per order to pay for ads.
- Sales that close quickly through chat or a web page.
Think hard first
- Products with margins so thin there is almost nothing left for ads.
- B2B services with decision cycles of several months, which usually need to be measured in quality leads rather than immediate sales.
- An online storefront that is not ready, for example slow chat replies or a slow website.
Design a small test before deciding
- Match the campaign objective to what you want. If you want sales, choose a sales objective, not engagement.
- Set up measurement first, such as Meta Pixel or the Conversions API on your website, or systematic tracking of orders from chat. If you cannot measure, you cannot decide.
- Prepare three to five creatives with different selling angles: solving a problem, customer reviews, before and after.
- Set a test budget and period you can afford to lose, and do not edit the campaign every day so the system has time to learn.
- Judge results by cost per order, compared with the number from step one.
Good ads cannot save a product that makes no profit. They just help you find out sooner.
When results are poor, check these first
- People click but do not buy: the problem may be the page, the price or the chat response, not the ad.
- Nobody clicks: the image or opening line is not stopping the scroll. Try a different angle.
- It worked, then slowly got worse: people have seen the same ad too often. Check frequency and refresh the creative.
- Platform numbers do not match real sales: check your measurement setup before trusting the figures.
Make each order worth more without raising the budget
- Increase order value, for example with bundles or free shipping above a threshold, so profit per order rises.
- Look after existing customers: invite them to your LINE OA or email list so you can sell again without paying for a new ad each time.
- Reply to chats quickly. Customers who message from an ad often compare several shops, and the one that replies first has a better chance of closing.
Cautions
Follow Meta's advertising policies, especially for health, beauty and financial products, and avoid exaggerated claims. If you collect customer data to build Custom Audiences, handle it in line with personal data protection law. If unsure, consult a legal professional.
How to start
- Calculate gross profit per order for your main product.
- Set the maximum ad cost per order you can accept.
- Get measurement working before launching a campaign.
- Test several creatives with a budget you can afford to lose.
- Decide based on cost per order, and scale only what passes.
