Marketing on a Tight Budget: Doing Fewer Things That Work

A small budget does not stop you marketing. Focus on one customer group, use free channels well, make content from what you have, and measure where every baht goes.

A new home bakery has a marketing budget of a few thousand baht a month. The owner tries everything at once: Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages, small ads on every channel, and a paid review. Two months later they are exhausted, the money is gone, and they cannot tell where customers came from. The problem with a tight budget is not that the money is small. It is spreading small money across so many places that nothing works.

What is marketing on a tight budget?

It means choosing to do fewer things, but doing them deeply and measurably. Make full use of what you already have, such as product knowledge, existing customers and free channels, before spending more, and spend only when you know what works.

Choose one clear customer group

“Everyone who likes sweets” is too broad for a small budget. Narrow it to “office workers in Ari who want treats for meetings or as gifts for friends”. Once you know who your customer is, you know which channels they use, why they buy and what message to use.

Questions that sharpen your focus

Make the most of free channels first

Google Business Profile

For businesses with a shop or local service, complete every detail, including opening hours, real photos and menu, and reply to every review. People searching for nearby shops will find you.

LINE OA

Ask customers who have bought to add you, so you can announce new items or take pre-orders. Existing customers are the easiest to sell to, and you do not pay for ads to reach them again.

Pick one main social channel

Choose the channel your main customers use most and post consistently there first, then adapt the content lightly for other channels. That beats five channels run inconsistently.

Make content from what you already have

A phone, window light and consistency matter more than expensive equipment.

Spend money once you know what works

When a post gets more interest or chat enquiries than usual, that is your signal to promote it to a narrow target group. Set a small, short test budget and check results before increasing. Do not pay to push posts nobody cared about in the first place.

Partnerships that cost little

Pair up with nearby businesses that share your customers but do not compete, such as a café selling your pastries, or a florist offering a joint gift set. Both sides gain new customers without paying for ads.

Measure where every baht goes

What to avoid on a small budget

A small budget does not force you to think small. It forces you to think clearly.

Where to start

  1. Describe your main customer group in one sentence.
  2. Set up your Google Business Profile and LINE OA completely.
  3. Pick one main social channel and plan four weeks of content from what you already have.
  4. Ask every new customer where they came from and log it.
  5. After a month, spend promotion budget only on your best-performing content.
