Looker Studio (Data Studio) + AI: Automating Marketing Reports

Combine Google Analytics, Google Ads and Sheets into a self-updating marketing report, use Gemini for calculated fields, and schedule email delivery.

At the start of every month, the marketing team at an online skincare brand opens Google Analytics, Google Ads and spreadsheets of ad spend from other platforms, then copies numbers into slides cell by cell. By the time it is done, the moment to shift budget has already passed. If this sounds familiar, Looker Studio combined with AI can make the same report update itself and reach your team on schedule.

What is Looker Studio, and why is it now called Data Studio?

Looker Studio is Google's web-based tool for building reports and dashboards that connect directly to data sources. Google announced on the Google Developer forum on 13 April 2026 that Looker Studio would return to the name Data Studio. If you see both names, they refer to the same tool.

The mechanism: from data source to a self-updating report

1. Connectors pull live data

Google's Available connectors documentation lists Google connectors such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, Search Console, YouTube Analytics, Google Sheets, BigQuery and CSV upload. Once connected, the report pulls fresh data on each refresh without copy and paste. Data from platforms without a Google connector, such as social media ad spend or marketplace sales, is usually brought into Google Sheets first and then connected to Data Studio.

2. Blends and calculated fields

Blending combines data sources on shared keys such as date and campaign name. You then create calculated fields such as ROAS (revenue divided by ad spend), or group channels with a CASE condition so inconsistently named campaigns fall into one group.

3. Gemini helps write formulas

Google's Gemini in Data Studio documentation states you can create calculated fields from plain language via the "Help me write" icon in the field editor, and add report content to Google Slides with a generated text summary. Both features are in Preview and require a Data Studio Pro subscription enabled by an administrator. If you do not have it, you can use general ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to draft formulas and paste them in yourself.

4. Ask your data in plain language

Google offers Conversational Analytics for asking questions of your data in plain language. The documentation says the new experience is available to all Data Studio users and supports BigQuery data agents, which suits teams that already keep data in BigQuery.

Example: an online brand's weekly marketing report

Then set up Schedule email delivery for every Monday morning. Google's documentation says the report is sent as a PDF with a link to the full report, to up to 50 email addresses. Standard accounts can schedule at most once a day, while Pro allows up to hourly delivery and delivery to Google Chat or Slack.

The best report is the one nobody has to copy numbers into anymore.

Watch out for

How to get started

  1. Pick one marketing report you build by hand every week.
  2. Connect the available connectors and move other platforms' data into Google Sheets with fixed columns.
  3. Standardise campaign names, then have AI help write a CASE statement for channel grouping.
  4. Build a 3-page report and check the numbers against the source platforms.
  5. Schedule automatic email delivery and ask the team for feedback after one month.
