How Long Should Your Resume Be?
The right resume length for each career stage, how to cut to one page without losing key results, and when two pages or a longer CV fits better.
You have six years of experience and a resume three and a half pages long. One friend says “one page only”; another says “include everything so they see how much you have done”. So you shrink the font and margins until you squeeze it onto one barely readable page. Neither advice is entirely wrong, but neither addresses the more important question: what does the reader need to see?
What the right length is
The right length is the shortest that still shows your full value for that job. Recruiters read many resumes a day and scan the top first. If the first part is unclear, page two may never be opened. So the number of pages matters less than how you order the content.
Guidelines by career stage
Students and new graduates
One page is enough. Focus on education, projects, internships, activities and skills. Going over one page usually means listing every activity or writing descriptions that are too long.
A few years to mid-level
One to two pages. If all your jobs are relevant and show clear results, two pages is fine, but the first page must already hold your best material.
Senior and executive
Two pages is normal. Very old roles can shrink to title, company and dates, or be grouped into a single “Earlier experience” line.
Academia, research and medicine
These often use a longer CV to show publications, grants and teaching. Follow the format the institution requires.
How to cut without losing value
- Remove routine duties everyone does: such as “attended team meetings” or “answered customer emails”; keep what shows results
- Limit bullets: about 4 to 6 for your latest role, 2 to 3 for older ones
- Merge similar bullets: if two describe similar work, combine them into one with a result
- Cut unnecessary information: detailed personal data, unrelated hobbies, or “I certify this information is true”
- Shorten education: after several years of work, skip high school and GPA
Example: before and after cutting
Before: “Responsible for customer care, answering customer questions by phone and email, coordinating with sales and warehouse teams, preparing monthly reports and attending weekly team meetings.”
After: “Supported corporate customers by phone and email, coordinated sales and warehouse teams to reduce delivery delays, and prepared the monthly report managers used for stock planning.”
The text is shorter, but the reader sees more impact.
What not to do to make it shorter
- Shrink the font until it is hard to read, or squeeze margins until the page is crammed
- Switch to two columns to fit more, which may make an ATS read in the wrong order
- Delete key achievements just to stay on one page
Specific things to know
- If the posting specifies a page count, follow it
- Resumes for some overseas markets follow different length conventions; check by country
- If you use two pages, put your name and a page number on page two
- A portfolio or LinkedIn link lets you keep the resume short and put details there
Frequently asked questions
If I am changing careers, should I include all my old jobs?
Keep them so your timeline is complete, but shorten the details and highlight transferable skills such as project management, client communication or data analysis.
Should I keep resumes of different lengths?
Keep a full master version as your own record, then cut a tailored version for each job. This lets you adapt quickly without forgetting older achievements.
Nobody is rejected for a two-page resume. Many are rejected because the first page says nothing.
Adjust your resume length
- Print your resume and underline every line related to the job you are applying for
- Cut or shorten the lines without underlines
- Move your strongest results to the top half of page one
- Check that font size and spacing are still easy to read
- Ask someone to read it for thirty seconds and say what they remember
