Healthcare and Wellness Marketing: How to Build Trust and Stay Within the Rules
Healthcare marketing differs from ordinary products. Learn how to build trust, create content that helps patients decide, the rules to know, and skills for the field.
A skin clinic posts before-and-after photos with the line “cured in 7 days”. Likes soar, but soon patients review that results were not as advertised, and the post gets reported. Another clinic films its doctor explaining what causes each type of acne, how to start caring for it and when to see a doctor. Sales do not jump overnight, but many new patients say they chose the clinic because the videos earned their trust. That is the heart of healthcare marketing.
What is healthcare and wellness marketing?
It is marketing for health-related businesses: hospitals, clinics, dentists and physiotherapy, through to gyms, spas and health products. Unlike ordinary products, customers are deciding about their own bodies, so they research longer, compare several providers and weigh credibility far more than promotions.
Build trust before chasing sales
Let experts do the talking
Content in which doctors, physiotherapists or nutritionists explain things in plain language carries more weight than ad copy. State the speaker's name and expertise clearly.
Answer patients' real questions
Collect the questions your front desk or page admins hear most, such as “how many days of recovery?”, “does it hurt?”, “who is it suitable for, and who not?”, and turn them into articles or short videos. These are what people search for before deciding.
Be honest about limits
Saying which service is not suitable for whom, or that results vary by person, does not lose customers. It brings in the right patients and leaves them more satisfied.
Common channels and how to use them
- Website and SEO articles for searches people make before deciding: symptoms, treatments and preparation
- Facebook and TikTok for short educational clips and behind-the-scenes of the team
- LINE OA for bookings, reminders and aftercare
- Google Maps reviews: reply to every review politely without revealing any patient's treatment details
Rules and restrictions to know
Health advertising in Thailand is governed by several laws. For example, Section 38 of the Healthcare Facilities Act B.E. 2541 (1998) requires private healthcare facility advertising that invites people to use their services to be approved before publication, through the Department of Health Service Support (HSS) or the provincial public health office. Advertising for drugs, food and medical devices falls under laws overseen by the Thai FDA. General principles to follow:
- Avoid exaggerated words such as cured, 100% safe, best, or no side effects
- Be careful with before-and-after images and reviews that could mislead about results
- Never disclose patients' health information without consent, which also relates to the PDPA
Legal details change, so check with HSS, the Thai FDA or a legal adviser before publishing each campaign.
Skills for marketers in this field
- Translating medical information into everyday language without distorting it
- Working with doctors and legal teams and accepting feedback on accuracy
- Reading marketing data such as cost per booking and show-up rate
- Understanding the patient journey from search to booking to aftercare
An example rewrite
Original: “Laser for clear skin, cures every skin problem, instant results.”
Better: “Laser treatment can help with some types of skin concerns. Results and the number of sessions depend on each person's skin. Consult a doctor for an assessment before starting.” It is less flashy, but it is true and attracts people who are ready to book a real consultation.
In healthcare, trust is the first product you have to sell.
Where to start
- Collect the ten questions customers ask most from your front desk and admins.
- Turn the first three into content, with an expert checking accuracy.
- Create a shared list of banned claims and the ad approval steps for the team.
- Set up polite review and chat responses that never reveal patient information.
- Measure results by actual bookings, not just likes.
