What Is a Growth Squad? Fractional Leaders, AI-Augmented Specialists and Agentic AI
Meet SCALE's Growth Squad model: how the Strategic, Execution and Autonomous tiers work together, who it suits, and what to watch out for.
A small home appliance brand selling through marketplaces wants to keep growing. Option one is to hire a full-time marketing manager, which takes time to recruit and still requires building a team underneath. Option two is to hire several freelancers, which leaves the owner coordinating everything. A third option is getting more attention: a ready-made team with the head, the hands and the automation in one package.
What is a Growth Squad?
The Growth Squad is a team model from SCALE (Scale Co., Ltd.), which positions itself as an AI Transformation Enabler for Thailand and ASEAN. The idea is to bring strategy, AI, MarTech and execution together in one transformation pod, focused on measurable results rather than slide decks.
The team is not billed by the hour and is not a loose group of unmanaged freelancers. It is a pre-structured unit that shares responsibility for growth KPIs with the client. If the fractional idea is new to you, start with What Is Fractional Work.
Tier 1: Scale Strategic
The top tier is fractional leadership at C-level, Director or Head-of level, responsible for:
- Setting strategy and the project's OKRs
- Pipeline governance, checking that work is on track
- Making strategic decisions together with the client's leadership
This tier is the team's "head", keeping all the execution pointed in one direction.
Tier 2: Scale Execution
The middle tier is AI-augmented execution specialists, such as people in performance marketing, data or automation who use AI to analyse, draft and experiment faster.
Why they need to be good with AI
In a small team, each person has to cover a wide range of work. Using AI with good judgement lets a few people deliver consistently, while a human still checks the quality of every piece.
Tier 3: Scale Autonomous
The bottom tier is an agentic AI stack that runs routine work 24/7, such as pulling data into reports, following up on leads, or flagging unusual numbers. To understand how AI agents work, read What Is an AI Agent.
How the three tiers work together
Think back to the appliance brand above.
- Strategic sets this quarter's goal of growing sales through the brand's own channels and picks the customer segment to focus on
- Execution designs campaigns, tests ad messages and sets up the CRM
- Autonomous sends follow-up messages to customers based on rules and summarises the numbers every morning
The owner ends up with a team that has thinkers, doers and systems handling repetitive work, with clear ownership of results.
Where the people come from
SCALE uses a dual-brand model. Plants.work is the open talent supply, where fractional specialists self-onboard and are screened and benchmarked. SCALE handles scoping, contracting and delivery with business clients. The SCALE Squad campaign on Plants.work currently lists 24 roles, working remotely with clients across ASEAN, at about 8 to 20 hours per week per project.
Cautions
- AI needs human oversight. Work done by agents must be reviewed and have clearly limited permissions, especially when it touches customer data
- Data must be ready. If data is scattered, the early phase will be spent organising it first
- The internal team must take part. The model works best when the client's leaders share decisions and absorb the knowledge
A good team in the AI era is not measured by headcount, but by how clearly each tier knows its job.
How to get started
- Identify your growth goal and the main bottleneck in the business
- Split the work into three groups: decisions, execution, and repetitive work that can be automated
- See which group your current team is missing, then choose how to hire
