Fresh Graduate Resume: No Experience? How to Get HR's Attention
Resume-writing techniques for new graduates with no work experience who still want HR to pick up their resume and read it.
The classic new graduate problem: "Companies want people with experience, but I've never worked. Where am I supposed to get experience?" The good news is that HR teams hiring new graduates don't expect you to have 5 years of experience. They're looking for something else.
What HR Looks for in a New Graduate's Resume
HR doesn't just look at GPA. In order, what they look at is:
- Job-relevant skills: do they match the JD?
- Activities / projects / internships: show that you can "get things done"
- Enthusiasm: a tailored cover letter and a resume adapted to the job
- Presentation: a resume that is easy to read, clean and free of typos
Resume Structure for New Graduates
1. Header: Name, Contact Details, LinkedIn
Full name, phone number, email (a professional one, not cutekitty@gmail.com), LinkedIn URL. If you have a portfolio website, include it too.
2. Summary: 2 to 3 Lines About Yourself
Example: "Marketing graduate from Chulalongkorn University with internship experience in Digital Marketing at [company]. Skilled in Social Media Strategy, Content Creation and Data Analytics. Seeking a Junior Marketing position where I can apply these skills."
3. Education: Include GPA Only If It's Good (3.0+)
Degree, university, graduation year, GPA (if 3.0+). If you have honours, dean's list or a relevant thesis, include them.
4. Experience: Even If It Isn't a "Job", You Can Include It
No full-time job? Include these:
- ๐ข Internships: position, company, dates and what you did (focus on results)
- ๐ University projects: thesis, senior project, relevant group projects
- ๐ค Activities: club president, event organising, volunteering (emphasise leadership and teamwork)
- ๐ผ Part-time jobs: even if unrelated to your field, they show work ethic
- ๐ป Side projects: a website, blog, YouTube channel or online shop
Write in an achievement-based way, not duty-based:
- โ "Managed the club's social media"
- โ "Managed the photography club's Instagram, growing followers 200% in 3 months from 500 to 1,500"
5. Skills: Include Both Hard Skills and Soft Skills
Hard Skills: Excel, Python, Canva, Google Analytics, Photoshop, etc.
Soft Skills: Communication, Teamwork, Problem Solving, etc.
Languages: Thai (native), English (TOEIC score if you have one)
AI Skills: ChatGPT, Claude, a big advantage in 2026. See ChatGPT Beginner's Guide
6. Certifications: Online Courses Count!
Certificates from online courses can be included: Google Analytics, HubSpot, Power BI, AWS, etc. Learn for free at Plants.work Learn, where every course comes with a certificate.
10 Things to Avoid
- โ A resume longer than 1 page: new graduates shouldn't exceed 1 page
- โ An unprofessional photo: no selfies or photos cropped from a party
- โ Typos: have someone else proofread it, or use AI to help
- โ Using a free template everyone uses: it makes every resume look the same
- โ Too much personal information: no need to include weight, height or religion
- โ An unprofessional email: use firstname.lastname@gmail.com
- โ Low GPA: if it's below 2.5, leave it out and focus on skills instead
- โ An overly broad objective: "I want a good job" doesn't help
- โ Sending the same resume everywhere: tailor it every time
- โ Sending a .docx file: always send a PDF
