ChatGPT Study Mode: Learn With Your Own Personal AI Tutor
What ChatGPT Study Mode is, how to turn it on, how to use it for exams, languages, Excel or coding, with sample prompts and cautions.
Have you ever asked AI a question, got a complete answer in three seconds, copied it, then had to ask the same thing again a week later? Getting an answer fast doesn't mean you understand it. That's why ChatGPT has a mode called Study Mode, designed to make the AI act like a tutor rather than an answer machine.
What is Study Mode?
According to OpenAI's help page, Study Mode guides you with questions instead of giving the answer right away, explains concepts in layers from simple to detailed, creates practice questions and quizzes to check your understanding, and works with files you upload such as notes, slides, PDFs or images. OpenAI says it is available across ChatGPT plans on web, iOS and Android.
How is it different from normal ChatGPT?
- Normal mode: you ask and the AI answers in full immediately. You get the answer, but may not practise thinking
- Study Mode: you ask and the AI asks what you think, gives hints step by step, checks your answer and explains where you went wrong
The result is that you have to do the thinking yourself, which is what helps you remember longer. Read more about the principles behind this in Learning How to Learn.
How to turn it on
- Web: type @study in the message box, or click + and type study, then choose Study
- iOS: tap + and choose Study. If you don't see it, search the menu
- Android: tap +, then search for and choose Study
OpenAI's help page says this mode is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects. Menus may change with updates, so check the latest help page if you can't find it.
What you can use it for, with sample prompts
Exam or certification prep
Upload your summary notes and type: "Create 5 questions from this file, one at a time. Wait for my answer before revealing the solution, then summarise the topics I'm weak on."
Excel and data
"I'm a basic Excel user and have never made a Pivot Table. Teach me step by step using made-up sales data. If I get it wrong, don't give the answer straight away; give me a hint first."
Learning to code
"Give me a beginner Python exercise to write a function that calculates an average. If my code is wrong, point to the line I should look at instead of fixing it for me."
Practising English for work
"Help me practise writing an email in English asking to reschedule a meeting. Let me draft it first, then point out what to improve and why."
A real-world example for professionals
Imagine a salesperson who has to start building sales reports herself. Previously she had AI write formulas and pasted them in, but when the data format changed she couldn't fix them. Switching to Study Mode, she had the AI teach her step by step using a sample file with customer data removed, did exercises until she understood how each formula worked, and could fix the report herself when the file's columns changed. (A hypothetical example for illustration.)
Tips to get more out of it
- State your level so the AI can pitch the difficulty right
- Set a clear goal, e.g. "I want to build a monthly sales dashboard myself"
- Always ask for exercises; don't just read explanations
- End with a summary: ask the AI to list what you learned today and keep it for review
Watch out for
- OpenAI itself says Study Mode can make mistakes. Verify important information with reliable sources
- It may sometimes give a direct answer. If you want to practise thinking, ask for hints or step-by-step guidance instead
- OpenAI says this mode does not replace teachers, tutors or course materials
- Don't upload confidential company documents to make exercises
The most helpful AI isn't the one that answers fastest, but the one that helps you think for yourself.
