5 ChatGPT Prompts That Help SMEs Sell More
5 ready-to-use prompts for shop owners, from captions and chat replies to content ideas, competitor analysis and ad copy, plus cautions.
An online clothing shop gets new stock every week, but the owner spends half the night thinking up captions and half the next day answering the same price questions in chat. If that sounds like you, ChatGPT can genuinely help. Not because it is better than you, but because it drafts repetitive work faster so you can spend your time on what matters more.
What makes a good prompt for an SME?
A prompt is the instruction you type for the AI. The most common problem is being too short, for example just asking it to write a caption, and getting generic text that could fit any shop. A good prompt says what you sell, who you sell to, what tone to use, where it will be posted and what you want the customer to do next.
Prepare a 5-line brand brief first
- What the shop sells and what makes it stand out
- Who your main customers are, their age range and interests
- Your brand tone, for example friendly, cute or professional
- Words you use and words you avoid
- Your sales channels, such as Facebook, TikTok, LINE OA
Keep it in a note and paste it at the top of every prompt. The output will match your brand much more closely.
5 prompts you can use right away
Prompt 1: Write a sales caption
Write a sales caption for [product name] for a [Facebook/TikTok/LINE] post. The target audience is [age/interests]. Tone: [fun/serious/cute]. No more than 3 lines, ending with a call to action. Give me 3 versions.
Example: a homemade bread shop that says its customers are office workers wanting a snack that is not too sweet will get captions about the 3 pm slump that land better than a broad one.
Prompt 2: Reply to customer chats
A customer asked [question]. Shop details: [price, shipping fee, delivery time]. Write a reply that answers the question directly, is polite and friendly, and invites them to order without pressure.
Tip: always include your real shop details, otherwise the AI may guess prices or conditions. Use this prompt to draft ready-made replies for your 10 most common questions and save them for reuse.
Prompt 3: Content ideas
Suggest 10 content ideas for a [type of shop] on [platform], alternating between educational posts, behind the scenes, customer reviews and promotions. Suggest a suitable post format for each idea.
Prompt 4: Analyse competitors and find your edge
Here is what I observed about competing shops: [prices, products, how they post]. We sell [product] at [price range] and our strength is [strength]. Summarise the strengths and weaknesses of each side and suggest 3 ways we can stand out.
Important: the AI may not have up-to-date information on a specific shop. Observe them yourself and paste the details in, and the analysis will be grounded in reality.
Prompt 5: Write ad copy
Write ad copy for [Facebook/TikTok]. The product is [name], priced at [price], for [audience]. The goal is [chat/website visit/purchase]. Give me 3 versions, each with a different selling angle.
Test all 3 versions with a small budget first, then put more budget behind whichever performs better.
Tips for better results
- Ask for several versions: you get options to pick from or combine.
- Keep refining: for example, ask it to cut the length in half or make the tone more playful.
- Give examples: paste an old caption that sold well and ask for that style. This technique is called few-shot; read more in Few-shot Prompting.
- You can prompt in Thai: but always reread, as the phrasing can sometimes be stiff.
AI drafts, the seller decides. The shops that benefit are the ones that know their customers best.
Cautions
- Check the facts every time: AI may overstate product benefits or add information that does not exist. Never post without reading.
- Do not paste customers' personal data: such as names, phone numbers and addresses, which are protected under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (PDPA) (per KTC's PDPA article). Remove it or replace it with dummy data first. If you are unsure about the legal side, consult a professional.
- Check each platform's advertising rules: some ad wording may not be approved.
- Don't let every post sound the same: add real stories from your shop yourself.
