How to Write Blog Posts That Rank on Google: From Topic to Results
Pick topics people actually search, answer better than other pages, structure for easy reading and measure in Search Console, with a pre-publish checklist.
A company's marketing team published a blog post every week for six months. Topics came from what the team wanted to say, such as company news and awards. Months later, Google traffic had barely moved. The problem was not how often they wrote: the posts did not answer what people were searching for. This article shows how to write blog posts with a real chance of ranking, from picking a topic to measuring results.
What a ranking blog post is
It is an article that answers a searcher's question well enough that Google chooses to show it in results. There is no secret formula. The core is understanding what searchers want and giving an answer that is more complete, clearer and more trustworthy than other pages. SEO techniques help Google understand a page, but they cannot make up for unhelpful content.
Step 1: pick topics people actually search
Start from customer questions
Collect the questions your sales and support teams hear most. These are often the words people type into Google, such as "how many BTU for a bedroom air conditioner" for an air conditioner shop.
Check search intent
Search the term on Google and see what kind of pages rank. If they are how-to articles, write a how-to article. If they are product pages, searchers are ready to buy, and an article may not be the right format.
Choose terms you can win
Broad terms are highly competitive. Start with more specific ones, such as "how to choose an air conditioner for a 12 square metre bedroom". Learn more in Keyword research basics.
Step 2: answer better than others
- Answer early: give a short answer in the first paragraphs, then expand
- Add what only you know: real experience, customer examples and your own photos, which other pages cannot copy
- Answer follow-up questions: think about what readers will wonder next and include it
- Name your sources: if you use figures or information from elsewhere, say where it came from
Write for readers first, then check that Google understands it.
Example opening
Instead of opening with "Today, air conditioners are an essential appliance in every home", open with the answer, for example: "A bedroom of about 12 square metres usually needs a small unit, but if it gets afternoon sun or is on the top floor, size up. Below is how to calculate the right size for your room." Readers know immediately they are in the right place.
Step 3: structure for easy reading
- Put the main keyword in the title and make clear what readers will get
- Order subheadings by what readers need, not by what you want to say
- Keep paragraphs short; use lists for multiple points or steps
- Write a meta description that sums up the benefit, since it often appears under the title in results
- Add alt text that says what each image actually shows
Step 4: link internally and externally
Linking to related articles on your site keeps readers going and helps Google understand your site's structure. Links from other sites pointing to yours are one signal of credibility. The sustainable way to earn them is content people want to reference. Read more in the Backlinks guide.
Step 5: measure and improve
Use Google Search Console to see which queries show your article and how many people see and click it. For articles with many impressions but few clicks, try a better title and meta description. For articles ranking just short of page one, add the content that is missing. SEO takes time, so do not judge results in the first week.
Cautions
- Stuffing keywords until the text reads unnaturally
- Using AI to mass-produce articles without fact-checking or adding real experience: the content will resemble other pages and have no reason to rank
- Writing several articles on the same topic so they compete with each other
How to start
- Collect 20 customer questions and pick the five most relevant to your business
- Search each one on Google to see intent and competition
- Write your first article using steps 2 and 3
- Set up Search Console and link the new article from related pages
- Review results monthly, and improve existing articles before writing new ones
