AI for Clinics and Beauty Businesses: Front-Desk Help Without Crossing the Medical Line
How clinics and beauty businesses can use AI safely: bookings, general FAQs, pre-visit forms, post-treatment symptom triage and content that respects Thai advertising rules.
Imagine a three-branch dermatology and beauty clinic in Bangkok that receives hundreds of chat messages a day, most asking the same things: how much it costs, which days are free, how to prepare. Hidden among them are far more important messages, such as a customer who has just had a procedure and is experiencing something unusual, buried beneath promotion questions. Health and beauty businesses gain a lot from AI, but they are also where the line between "customer service" and "medical advice" must be the clearest.
What should AI do in a clinic?
Think of AI as a "receptionist and administrative assistant", not a doctor or nurse. Suitable work includes scheduling, answering general information the clinic has approved, collecting basic information before a consultation, sending reminders, and flagging messages that medical staff need to see immediately. AI must not diagnose, recommend treatment or guarantee any result.
Five places AI can help a clinic
1. Bookings and reminders
Connect AI to doctor and treatment room schedules so customers can book or reschedule via LINE OA, and send reminders with preparation instructions written by the doctor. This reduces no-shows and phone work at the front desk.
2. Answer general questions from approved information
Build a knowledge base from documents the clinic has reviewed, such as prices, opening hours, parking, service steps and the rescheduling policy. AI answers only what is in the knowledge base; if something is missing, it says a staff member will get back to them.
3. Flag messages that need a person urgently
Set AI to catch words indicating post-treatment symptoms, such as swelling, redness, pain or fever, and forward them to a nurse or doctor immediately, with a message advising the customer to go to a hospital or call 1669 in an emergency.
4. Pre-consultation forms
Let AI help customers fill in basic information such as drug allergies, current medications and what they want to discuss, organised so the doctor can read it easily before the consultation. All assessment and decisions remain with the doctor.
5. Analyse customer feedback
Summarise reviews and post-service surveys, for example long waits, incomplete explanations from staff or not enough parking, to improve service, not to advertise treatment results.
Hypothetical example: the three-branch dermatology clinic
The clinic sets up an AI assistant on LINE OA that books appointments and answers questions from a knowledge base reviewed by doctors and managers. Messages containing symptom words are sent to the nurses' group immediately. The front desk has more time for customers who arrive at the clinic, and the marketing team uses AI to draft general skincare education content, which a doctor reviews every time before publishing.
Let AI help customers get care faster, not make them believe what they should not.
Cautions
- Health data is sensitive data: treatment and illness information is classified as sensitive data under section 26 of the PDPA. You need an appropriate lawful basis, restricted access, and only tools the clinic has verified store data securely.
- Clinic advertising requires approval: section 38 of the Sanatorium Act B.E. 2541 (1998) prohibits advertising that is false, exaggerated, or likely to cause material misunderstanding, and advertising requires prior approval from the licensing authority. The Department of Health Service Support manual says to file with the Department (DHSS) for Bangkok or with the provincial public health office in other provinces. AI-drafted content must go through this process like any other content.
- Never let AI diagnose or guarantee results: configure it to politely decline treatment questions and hand over to medical staff.
- Before and after photos: never let AI create or edit result photos, because that is misleading. Even with real photos, the Ministry of Public Health announcement on sanatorium advertising prohibits before and after treatment comparisons presented in a misleading way or not in line with medical principles, so they need approval and extra care.
The legal information in this article is general. The rules depend on your type of business: for example, spas and wellness businesses fall under the Health Establishments Act B.E. 2559 (2016), and advertising claims for cosmetic products fall under the Cosmetics Act B.E. 2558 (2015). Check the rules for your business and consult the relevant authorities or a legal advisor.
How to get started
- Write a list of what AI "may answer" and what it "must hand to a person", approved by doctors and managers.
- Build the knowledge base only from reviewed information, and assign someone to update it when prices or promotions change.
- Start with bookings and reminders, because they are low risk.
- Test urgent-message flagging with real examples that have had identifying details removed.
- Review a random sample of conversations every week during the first month.
