What Is Affiliate Marketing? Earn Online Without Your Own Products
How affiliate marketing works, how to pick a platform and niche, what content earns trust, plus tax cautions and first steps.
You may have watched a review of a desk fan and tapped the basket under the clip to buy it right away. The creator does not own the product or pack the parcel, yet earns a share of that sale. This is affiliate marketing, a model many Thai creators, side-hustlers and SMEs are interested in.
What is affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing means recommending other people's products or services through your own unique link. When someone clicks it and buys under the programme's conditions, you earn a commission, without holding stock, shipping or handling after-sales service.
Basic steps
- Join a platform's or brand's affiliate programme.
- Choose products to recommend and create your unique link.
- Make content such as reviews, short videos, articles or comparison posts, and include the link.
- When the system credits a purchase to you, you earn commission at that programme's rate and conditions.
Commission rates vary by platform, product category and promotion period, and change often. Always check the latest figures on the platform's own programme page.
Channels Thai creators often use
- Shopee Affiliate and Lazada Affiliate: a wide product range, suited to reviewers on several channels.
- TikTok Shop Affiliate: suited to short videos and live streams showing products in use.
- Brands' own programmes: such as software, online courses or services, often suited to blogs and educational content.
- Amazon Associates: for English content with audiences abroad.
Who affiliate marketing suits
- People who enjoy testing and reviewing real products and can explain who they suit.
- People who already write or talk about one topic, such as work gear, clean eating or baby products.
- People with a small following that trusts their recommendations.
- SMEs wanting partners to help sell their products can use the model in reverse.
5 techniques for results that keep trust
1. Pick a niche you really know
Rather than reviewing everything, choose one category you use and understand, such as home-office gear. Expertise makes people come back and trust your advice.
2. Inform first, sell second
Share pros, cons, who should not buy, and comparisons with alternatives. Example line: This one is quiet and light, but if your room is bigger than 20 square metres it may not be enough.
3. Make content people can find
Articles or videos that answer real search questions, such as how to choose a work chair or comparing two models, can keep being found. Learn more in Content Marketing basics.
4. Use several channels around one core
Pick one main channel you can keep up consistently, then adapt content for others. Better than opening every channel and burning out.
5. Track and adjust
Check the affiliate dashboard for which products get clicks and real purchases and which formats work, then do more of what works.
Cautions
- Tell viewers plainly it is an affiliate link: transparency protects trust over time.
- Do not exaggerate claims: especially for supplements, cosmetics and health products.
- Tax: commission is income that must be declared for personal income tax. Keep monthly income records and consult the Revenue Department or an accountant about your specific case.
- Income is uncertain: do not quit your job just because the first month went well.
The link earns the commission, but honesty earns the repeat click.
How to start in 30 days
- Week one: choose one niche and one main channel.
- Join an affiliate programme with many products in that niche and read the terms fully.
- Weeks two to three: create 6 to 8 pieces of content about products you actually use.
- Final week: review the stats, pick the 2 best-performing pieces and build on them.
